The Land Challenge (EN)

The world needs to produce more minerals in support of the green energy transition. To meet the forecasted need for copper alone, up to 200 large new mines need to be brought into production by 2050, at a rate of up to 6 new mines opening each year. Put simply, this will be very difficult to achieve: new large copper mines currently take an average of 23 years to develop, require the acquisition of approximately 8000 hectares of land, and often necessitate the displacement of numerous communities and households. In this paper, SRA directors Gerry Reddy and Mike Steyn outline a new approach to mine development and particularly land acquisition, one that enables (a) faster and more cost effective mine development, (b) minimization of the impacts of land acquisition, and (c) creative ways of mitigating the displacement impacts that do occur.
