Insight series compendium
Mining, Climate Change and Land Access & Resettlement
Climate Change will affect every aspect of the mining industry, including access to land, water and other critical resources, as well as impact the lives and livelihoods of the communities among whom mining companies operate. Anglo American and SRA believe that Climate Change is one of the defining challenges of our time. We are pleased to jointly present this Insight Series Compendium on the key considerations and practical steps that mining projects and operations can take to mainstream Climate Change considerations into their land access, displacement, and resettlement processes.
Overview
Anglo American and SRA are pleased to jointly present this Insight Series Compendium on the key considerations and practical steps that mining projects and operations can take to mainstream Climate Change considerations into their land access, displacement, and resettlement processes.
Climate Change is real and intensifying. The Earth is experiencing changes in average temperature, shifts in the seasons, increasing frequency of extreme weather events and chronic, slow onset climatic impacts, which in turn are generating substantial, non-linear biophysical and socio-economic impacts.
Climate Change will disproportionately impact disadvantaged and vulnerable populations in less developed countries, Indigenous peoples, and rural communities dependent on agriculture. It will reduce their access to drinking water, their crop yields and their food security, and increase risks to their health and physical security.
In turn, Climate Change represents a significant risk for mines and mine adjacent communities. Among other effects, it will impact the socio-economic conditions in which mining companies operate, and also restrict their capacity to mitigate displacement impacts, in part by reducing their ability to acquire suitable land and water for resettlement and livelihood restoration.
Mainstreaming the risks presented by Climate Change into land access and resettlement processes will require changes in how mining companies engage with their host communities, select and design resettlement sites, design resettlement housing and infrastructure, restore livelihoods, and support community adaptive capacities.
